Additional Ingredient
1. Prepare the Dough
In a mixing bowl, combine 250 grams of plain flour and a pinch of salt. Add 1 egg, 120 millilitres of lukewarm water, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it by hand for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
The dough is very sticky, but resist the temptation of adding more flour. Scrape the dough from the surface with a dough palette.
Brush the dough lightly with oil, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rest for at least 1 hour.
2. Prepare the Apple Filling
In a bowl, toss the apple slices with 100 grams of caster sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1 zest of lemon, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 50 grams of soaked raisins (if using), and 100 grams of chopped walnuts. Set the filling aside.
3. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). Line a baking tray with baking parchment and set it aside.
4. Roll Out the Dough
Roll out the dough as thinly as possible on a clean kitchen towel. Using the back of your hand, gently stretch the dough until it is almost translucent.
5. Assemble the Strudel
Brush the stretched dough with about ⅔ of the melted butter. Spread the apple filling on one side of the dough, leaving an edge about 5 cm wide. Tuck in the sides and carefully lift the edge of the dough with the help of the kitchen towel and roll it up tightly.
6. Bake the Apple Strudel
Place the strudel, seam side down, on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the surface generously with the remaining melted butter and bake for approximately 40-45 minutes until golden brown.
7. Serve
Allow the strudel to cool slightly before dusting it with icing sugar. Slice and serve warm with caramel sauce, whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream.
